In two days, it will be March and March is traditionally celebrated as women’s history month. So, as I sit in our museum which overlooks a large garden right in the heart of downtown, I am regularly reminded of the transformative change that can be accomplished by a group of smart and committed women. Our benefactor, Kathryn Heard-Craig, was a woman with multiple college degrees far ahead of her time. Not only did she defy the odds in 1957 when she took over her husband’s Board position at Austin College, but she altered convention when she decided to create a museum from her vast monetary holdings. Her vision and gift have benefitted society, the economy, and countless art and social organizations.

The significance of women in leadership roles cannot be overstated and that’s why the Heard-Craig Center has been honored to bring many Smithsonian traveling exhibits to the DFW area. Our favorite Smithsonian exhibit has been about Women Inventors, which highlighted the accomplishments of women scientists and those who have forged careers in traditionally male fields. (https://womenshistory.si.edu/womens-history-month) The Smithsonian Discoverability Lab is terrific, making it easy to find historical accounts of women in leadership roles.

By stepping into a technical and/or scientific career, women leaders serve as powerful role models for young girls and women everywhere. Their success stories inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams fearlessly. When girls see women in leadership positions, it helps encourages them to aspire to roles they might not have considered. So the next time your child talks careers with you, think about mentioning those careers that don’t’ come to mind readily, and see where your discussion takes you.
Studies indicate that adding women to leadership positions can significantly boost economic growth. When women lead, they often advocate for policies that promote social welfare, which can have far-reaching positive impacts on communities and economies. Investing in women’s leadership becomes an economic advantage for cities, counties, and states.
The significance of women’s leadership extends far beyond individual accomplishments. It is about shaping the future of our communities. It is about elevating the progress of what we do and about elevating the way we all work together to take more giant steps forward. We really are as strong as our weakest link, so during this month where women’s leadership is highlighted and celebrated, we give a salute to all the women who help to make the world a better place for all of us.
You can view many wonderful women who have influenced our community and society by watching our Collin County Oral History series interviews which are accessible on the McKinney Public Library website (https://www.mckinneytexas.org/1490/Oral-Histories).
